Portraits and Landscapes

Individuality, Shape, and Color. Each of these characteristics make up the attributes that are interesting and thought provoking in a work of art.

When depicting the human body, specifically the face, these characteristics help to define captivating aspects that make portraiture so unique. In the same thought, these characteristics are necessary to create a landscape that leaves the viewer with feelings other than boredom.

I became interested in portraiture during my early college days. There were so many new faces and each so different from the next that I felt compelled to try to recreate each and every one in my sketchbook. As I started to look towards the master's for inspiration, I found a love of the weird and grotesque that seemed to add an additional layer of interest to portraits. From there, I started to become bolder and embrace the weird and strange in portraiture.

During my semester studying in Italy, I was surrounded by the rolling hills and crumbling ruins lit by spectacular sunrises and sunsets. The professor who was teaching watercolor on this trip was encouraging of keep sketchbooks on one's person at all times. Through this practice, I spent many weeks attemtping to capture a fraction of the beauty that the architecture and landscapes of Italy had to offer. The images from Italy later served as the inspiration behind my Silkscreen prints.
